MISSION STATEMENT
Clover- earthkind hair salon is one of the first environmentally focused salons in the city. From construction to everyday operations we attempt to be as 'green' as is possible in our industry. Whether you are concerned about your health, you have colour allergies, or are concerned about our environment, you can be assured that we are striving to provide the cleanest, most chemically-reduced environment we can. We will use the best all-natural and chemically-reduced colours and natural hair care products that we can find. 100% of the products used in the salon are NOT tested on animals, and our recycling program goes above and beyond to add highlighting foils and colour tubes, something no other salon in Vancouver claims to do. Allergy free flooring, energy efficient bulbs and appliances, low voc paints, biodegradable cleaners and a commitment to continuously become more environmentally efficient are just a few of the things that set us apart from the rest. We will always be looking for ways to improve our business, environmentally and otherwise.

Green Workplace Consulting Solid Waste & Recycling Assessment
Clover Earthkind Hair Salon
678 Richards Street, Vancouver BC October 2009
1. Introduction This assessment was conducted to review and quantify the contents of the solid waste and recycling streams for Clover Earthkind Hair Salon at 678 Richards Street, Vancouver BC. This assessment has been designed to focus on: - annual volume of salon waste sent to landfill or incineration - annual volume of salon waste successfully diverted from landfill or incineration - the contents of salon waste and recycling - quantification of greenhouse gases reduced through salon recycling and waste diversion - general green initiatives enacted or in operation at Clover Earthkind at the time of this report
2. Methodology In consultation with Green Workplace, Clover Earthkind principal Jennifer Vanderleij set aside 1 weeks worth (5 working days) of salon waste and recyclables. Green Workplace staff then digitally weighed and photographed each weeks waste on 3 consecutive Mondays (Sept 14th, Sept 21st, and Sept 28th). Totals for each segment of the salons waste and recycling streams were then compiled and divided to create weekly averages which have been used to create an annual profile of both salon garbage and successfully diverted or recycled waste materials.
3. Key Findings • Clover Earthkind successfully recycles and/or diverts 77% of its solid waste stream. The average diversion rate in Canada is only 20% per person (source: Statistics Canada (2005)) • Clover Earthkind generates an estimated 123 kg of garbage per year. By contrast, Canadians generate an average of 974 kg of garbage per person per year (source: Statistics Canada (2005)). Clover Earthkind Salon generates 88% less garbage than the average Canadian person while employing 7 full-time and 2 part-time staff and serving approximately 6,000 customers per year. • Most of the remaining 23% of the solid waste stream that is not recycled consists of types of garbage for which recycling facilities do not yet exist (e.g. co-mingled waste). Organics composting (e.g. food scraps, paper towels) is an area of opportunity for even further waste reduction opportunities. A diversion rate of 80% is a target within reach. • Clover Earthkind has researched a recycling solution for 3 common work-related garbage items that are usually sent to landfill. These include hair clippings, foil colour tubes and aluminum foil from hair colouring. Recycling these 3 items reduces the total amount of garbage produced by the Salon by 21% or 112 kg per year. • Given the excellent waste reduction practices in place at Clover Earthkind, in addition to other green initiatives (Section 7.0), Clover Earthkind would qualify for Green Workplaces Green Office Champions Certification.
4. Clover Earthkinds Solid Waste Diversion Rate Diversion Rate Methodology The diversion rate for this facility has been calculated using the following formula: Clover Earthkinds Solid Waste and Recycling Streams: A Portrait
5. How Much Waste is Being Generated and Where Does it all Go?
Garbage Clover Earthkind generates an estimated 132 kilograms of garbage per year. By comparison, the average Canadian person generates 80 kg of garbage per year. The salon has 9 regular employees and serves approximately 6,000 customers per year. This equates to just 23 grams of garbage generated per customer per visit.
Mixed Paper Comprising 20% of Clover Earthkinds solid waste stream, mixed paper is successfully collected and recycled through Recycling Alternatives, keeping an estimated 116 kilograms of paper out of the landfill each year.
Recyclable Containers (Plastics: 1,2,4,5, glass and aluminum) Based on our 3 site visits, Green Workplace estimates that Clover Earthkind successfully recycles 96 kilograms of recyclable plastics and mixed containers each year. Recyclable Containers are placed in clearly marked blue bins by salon staff and clientele and then recycled through Recycling Alternatives company.
Aluminum Foil & Colour Tubes Aluminum Foil and Aluminum Colour Tubes, which (combined) make up the fourth largest part of Clover Earthkinds solid waste stream, are compressed into bricks by salon staff and sold to a local metal salvage company, preventing 73 kilograms of aluminum from being wasted annually.
Cardboard Clover Earthkind successfully recycles an estimated 73 kilograms of cardboard each year.
Hair An uncommon recyclable, human hair comprises 8% of Clover Earthkinds solid waste stream (an estimated 46 kilograms/year). Thus far, the salon has donated hair clippings to local individuals, who have used it as a backyard wildlife deterrent! Clover Earthkind is presently storing hair for future pick up, to be used in the clean up of local oil spills. The search for a more permanent recycling solution is underway.
Non-Commonly Recyclable Plastics (Plastics: 3,6,7 & non-numbered) 6% of Clover Earthkinds solid waste stream is comprised of non-commonly recyclable plastics, which are separated, stored and await recycling.
6. Greenhouse Gases Savings By committing to their rigorous diversion and recycling program, Clover Earthkind saves an estimated 0.66 tonnes of solid waste-related Greenhouse gases each year! Source: Green Workplace Quantifications of Clover Earthkinds Recycling and Solid Waste Streams based on: 'Upstream' and 'Downstream' Emissions references corresponding to: 'Recycling' & 'Land filling' columns (respectively) on page 155 of 'APPENDIX B: CARBON DIOXIDE EQUIVALENT EMISSION FACTORS' Exhibit B-1 Net GHG Emissions from Source Reduction and MSW Management Options - Emissions Counted from a Waste Generation Reference Point (MTCOE/Ton) - US EPA Solid Waste Management and Greenhouse Gases: A Life-Cycle Assessment of Emissions and Sinks. 3rd Edition September 2006. Colour FAQ's
At Clover, one of our aims is to ensure that we can give the safest and most gentle colour processes possible. Great for the client and hairdresser alike.
About to be a new mom? Allergies? Concerned about the strong chemical nature of colour? Whatever your reason might be, we have put much research into being able to finally give some 'naturally inspired' options for those a little wary about colour.
We have a handful of colour lines at Clover and are keeping on the lookout for the best new products that come onto the market as this wise choice becomes all the more fashionable.
Allergies?
There are ammonia allergies, simple sensitivities and one of the most common hair colour allergies: PPD's (p phenylenediamine). There are a few permanent lines that have stepped up and kicked the ugly chemicals out of the recipe, but upon researching (and much help and motivation from a lovely new client in need) I was amazed at how common PPD s are, even in some vegetable dyes.
~If you want to go pure, 100% vegetable based semi-permanent colours are one option. The ingredient list is clean and clear (and yes, we found companies that actually disclose their ingredients!)
Issues - Your colour options are suddenly very limited. There will be no lightening of your colour (deposit only) and have a maximum 13 colours to choose from. Grey coverage is possible depending on the texture of your hair. The more coarse it is, the more likely it is to be resistant though this doesn't make it impossible by any means. The processing time for these particular colours are about 15-20 minutes longer.
Benefits - Little or no cuticle damage, no fumes, shine and pretty colours!
*These colours are offered on a 'consultation/special order' basis so that you're able to see your options and have a complimentary chat about your hair while we work out what the best choice is for your needs.
PPD & ammonia free options?
~Depending on the severity of your allergy there are ammonia-free, organic vegetable based permanents with very low PPD's (0.6% as opposed to the 'standard' 3%+) or high end permanents with no PPD.
Issues - Not too many. The second colour mentioned is not as 'chemical-free' and opens the cuticle, changing the integrity of the hair as with common permanent dyes. This isn't so much of an issue as a common result from the 'chemical process' that colouring is. The ammonia-free, organic vegetable-based colour uses silk proteins to replace the corrosive ammonia. It is said that it gives the colour less strength as a colour remover and lightener, though personally, I find that it does a fine job.
Benefits - Grey coverage, longer lasting colour, shine and hopefully your allergy remains unaffected!
More information on the products themselves are noted below.
* If you have other allergies, we can work together to find a colour that will help you avoid it.
We're certainly willing to try!
New Mom or Mom to be?
You lucky ladies have never been out of options. The fear of fumes and chemical absorption through the skin are common, and now avoidable.
~Highlights are one way to go, which allows your hair to be coloured without the cream ever touching your scalp. This removes entirely the possibility of skin absorption.
~Like the idea of highlights but hate the stink that goes along with them? Ammonia-free bleaches have NO odour, letting you and I both breathe easy during your colour service.
~Yes to highlights, no to bleach? We are working with 2 ammonia-free lines that have a huge range of colours to choose from with the faint scent of liquorice candy instead of yuck.
~"But I don't want highlights at all!" Well then, choose from 100% vegetable dye (limited colour choices) or organic ingredient based permanents with no ammonia and lesser chemical ingredients than any other permanent.
Still worried? Call. We'll talk.
All natural options?
There are options for you, depending on what you want for your hair and what your main concern is. The more natural the colour, the more limited your choices become. Some clients are looking for a 100% natural alternative. This exists, but along with it comes a situation in which you may not be able to get exactly what you want. The colours are beautiful, but you have to want one of them as there is no mixing between shades. This makes my creativity sad, but happy that we can offer this service. A few companies have made great strides with what they leave out of the recipe, and the difference is amazing. Below is a list of better options for your health and hair.
Breakdown:
~Ammonia-free permanent and demi-permanent colours = no strong scent, a fantastic palette of colours, shine and your hair left in better condition.
~Ammonia-free/organic ingredient based permanent = silk proteins add to great shine and longevity of colour, less fading and an increased health of the hair over time. Huge palette of colours, pleasant odour, grey coverage and less chemicals than any well functioning permanent around.
~100% Vegetable based = the most natural option, well, 100% natural. Great colours and shine while keeping the integrity of your hair intact. No lifting or highlighting with this one. This will colour grey depending on the texture of your hair.
We offer complimentary consultations, which is always the best way to address your issues or concerns.
There you have it! If there are questions still out there, we'd be happy to answer them!

Antonella Biefeni - Hairstylist
Antonella started her hairdressing career over 20 years ago (yikes!!) and has vast experience in cutting, haircolouring, and styling, including much experience with updo's. She has studied under some very talented and experienced leaders in the industry over the years, and has always worked in downtown Vancouver--the heart of fashion and style. She believes you never stop learning, and always strives to expand her knowledge of hair cutting and colouring techniques. Her experience includes, most recently, training at the prestigious Bumble and bumble institute in New York. Besides having lots of experience in every aspect of hairdressing, as a curly girl she also has a lot of experience working with curls of all kinds. Says Antonella "I have never met a curl I didn't like"
Jennifer Vanderleij - Colour Technician
Jen has been painting strands and accenting nature as a colourist for the past ten years. As a former artistic educator she loves to explore possibilities and personalities with colour while leaving hair in the best shape possible. She is a fan of rich reds and pale blondes, but many coloured layered highlights are her gem.
No colour correction is too complicated for the patient and distressed client, and no option is too odd to consider. Her focus as of late is on all things ammonia-free and chemically diminished. The aim is perfecting the art of depth in colour and soft and shiny manes with a fun and flirty edge.
Maria Jarvis - Hairstylist
The lovely Maria has been doing hair for the past 21 years. After salon ownership and 5 years as a set hairdresser for films, she rejoined the salon world.
She loves the transformation that is created by full colours and cuts; highlighting her all time high. Her adoration for (and ownership of) curly hair has given life to her own 'curly club' for those with twist like hers! A perfect fit for clover, she happily embraces cruelty-free and eco beauty.
Maria is available Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Melanie Beaudette - Hairstylist
Melanie, the most recent addition to the clover family, is a French Canadian starting her career back east in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. She collected a great education there, moving to Vancouver in 2007 to further her career and education at Joji's hair academy. It is important for Melanie to understand a variety of different styles and techniques so that she may give her clients their desired looks. She has gone as far as to push herself to become a colour educator but soon realized that public speaking wasn't her favourite thing to do. She returned to work behind the chair to continue the work she loves, with her clients! Destined to be a brunette for life, she loves making girls blonde, living vicariously through them! Melanie is our new queen of updo's and creative work on long hair.
She has attended hair shows all over Canada and loves to leave her comfort zone by entering competitions. Her recent win was the 2008 Redken Cover Competition coming 1st place in BC.
Yoga, meditation, health, food, animals and the environment are just a few of Melanie's loves in life, making her and clover a perfect fit!
Andrea Fernandez - Hairstylist
Andrea has been doing hair for the past 11 years after completing training at Joji's academy in 1997. She takes a very relaxing and holistic approach to hairdressing, listening to your needs to create your vision. Andrea is a friendly, down to earth girl who loves doing hair, and though she excels at any cut, she loves short and sassy styles. Come to see her for a relaxing experience that leaves you feeling AND looking good!

Shelly Murray - Hairstylist
With 14 years in the industry, after Vidal Sasoon training and working under/with the incomparable Anthony Crosfield, Shelly has joined our humble hair home!
She loves all cuts and colours, favouring the close trim of men's cuts. Unfortunately for the population that has yet to enter her styling circle she is not taking any new clients.
Sorry!
Those lucky enough to be on her client list will continue to enjoy her sass and charm!
All of Clover's products are animal cruelty free!
Why John Master's?
We chose John Master's for their commitment to organic
hair care, pure and clean. No chemical ingredients here!

Liam Shea - Hairstylist
Liam is well-established in the Vancouver salon scene, with over ten years in the industry. He was lucky enough to train with some of Canadas top, award-winning stylists at cutting-edge salons. And now, thanks to Clovers dynamic concept, he is continuing to update his knowledge and skills, inspired by his fellow stylists. Being with people is the most rewarding part of the job for Liam. While he loves all aspects of fashion, right out to its edgy extremes, hes a slave to his clients, not to trends. Finding whats right for each individual is his goal. Hes an expert in precision cutting, from classic to ... well, as far as you want to take it.
At his last salon, he was the lone pioneer in pursuit of less toxic hair products. Now, at Clover, hes in his element, surrounded by likeminded eco-hair stylists. Liam lives for good people, food, wine, film, travel, art, ideas, politics ... in short, for la dolce vita.

Michael Croteau - Makeup Artist
Michael began his makeup career way back in the 80's (when he was 12 ahem) while studying Theatre in University and worked for various theatre companies including the Calgary Opera Society, and on many a costume event. Adapting his knowledge of theatre makeup for fashion and the street he developed his own classic style. Upon moving to Vancouver he found himself wanting to refine his work so he chose to study at the Blanche Macdonald Center where he obtained his diploma in Makeup Artistry. He loves to work individually with clients to meet their specific beauty needs and does a great job of it.
He excels at bringing out natural beauty. He also, using vegetable dyes, takes unlucky lashes from drab to fab - seriously, the lash tinting is our favourite! Whether it's brunch with the in-laws or a divalicious night on the town, you can trust Michael to make your vision your reality.
At Clover Earthkind Hair Salon we believe in leaving as little negative impact on the earth as possible, so we strive to use the most environmentally sensitive options as possible, wherever possible. We hope to help set a higher standard of responsibility in our industry and to become a role model for sustainability by continuing to improve our own initiatives.

Clover, Vancouvers first 100% animal cruelty free and environmentally sensitive hair studio, at 678 Richards Street
Or
Two local hairdressers launch Clover- earthkind salon
September xx, 2008 Vancouver, Canada: There are many ways for Vancouverites to show respect for the environment- Canada celebrates Earth Day on April 22, Canadian Environment Week is the first week of June, and Clean Air Day falls in the Wednesday of that week. But have you ever considered your choice of hair salon an environmental decision? Antonella Beifeni and Jennifer Vanderleij think you should.
Earlier this year, hairstylist Antonella Biefeni and colour technician Jennifer Vanderleij began investigating the heavy environmental impact of their vocation and decided to implement a change. We looked into ways a salon could be environmentally friendly and animal cruelty free when we found out there were substantial steps a salon could take to do just this, we decided it was time to open our own salon in line with those values, Vanderleij is quoted as saying. At this, the idea of Clover-earthkind salon was born. It is the product of many months of research on environmentally sensitive construction methods, retail practices and hair colouring products.
Vanderleij and Biefeni have created a salon that produces as little waste and toxins as is possible in their industry. Clients will receive professional services from highly trained staff and find only responsibly created products on the shelves. The goal is to make a difference in what has become a very wasteful and environmentally damaging industry."
One hundred percent of the products inside the salon, from cleaners to colours, are not tested on animals. The interior of the salon is modern meets vintage with stations made of reclaimed wood and an eclectic collection of new and used furniture all kept bright with biodegradable cleaners. Clover has allergy-free/environmentally compatible flooring, recycled ceiling tiles, walls coated in low voc (volatile organic compounds) paint, energy efficient appliances and bulbs to brighten the space. Their recycling program builds on the accepted standards, adding recycling of aluminum colour tubes and highlighting foils.
Clover carries a large range of cruelty-free colour lines, as well as ammonia-free permanent colours and vegetable based hair stains. Their retail ranges from wild-crafted organic and low sulfate hair care to high end shampoos and styling aids made by environmentally concerned companies. Their in-house make up artist uses vegetable dyes for brows and lashes and natural make up for all occasions. Their esthetician uses natural products for her services as well.
"It's really exciting to be part of this venture. Vancouver's hairstyling industry needs to step up as far as animal testing and the environment are concerned and we're hoping Clover acts as a model for other industry members," says Biefeni, co-owner.
Clover Hair Salon offers an alternative to those concerned about their health and the environment. Owners Biefeni and Vanderleij hope to entice green-minded clientele to drop by and also, to add to their family of stylists, people who share their enthusiasm for the environment.
